Roland Introduces Connected FP-40 Digital Piano and Piano Sphere

Roland has expanded its digital piano range with the new FP-40, the company’s first piano to feature integrated Wi-Fi. The new connectivity forms part of Roland’s broader strategy to create smarter musical instruments that connect players with online services, learning tools, and digital content.

The FP-40 goes beyond simply working alongside a learning app. Together with Piano Sphere, it forms a connected ecosystem designed to help players discover new music, develop their skills, and stay motivated to play regularly. Both the piano and app can receive wireless updates, allowing new features, services, and content to be added over time.

Masahiro Minowa, CEO and Representative Director of Roland Corporation, said the FP-40 and Piano Sphere represent the company’s “Direct Connect” strategy, introduced as part of Roland’s 2026 midterm management plan. The strategy focuses on creating stronger connections between Roland and its customers while supporting players throughout their individual musical journeys.

According to Minowa, the new system is intended to make the piano more accessible to people at different stages of their musical development—from those considering learning for the first time to experienced players looking to maintain their skills. The initiative also reflects Roland’s continued commitment to its long-standing vision, “We Design the Future.”

FP-40: Portable Design with Roland Technology

The FP-40 combines a compact, contemporary design with Roland’s piano technology and a built-in speaker system. Its slim cabinet is designed to fit comfortably into the home while delivering a detailed and expressive piano sound.

At the heart of the instrument is Roland’s Piano Reality Sound Engine, drawing on technology developed for the company’s high-end GP-series grand pianos. It is designed to reproduce the character, depth, and tonal detail of an acoustic piano.

The FP-40 uses Roland’s PHA-4 Standard keyboard, which features weighted hammer action, escapement, Ivory Feel keys, and triple-sensor technology. This combination provides a responsive and realistic playing experience while giving developing pianists a solid platform for improving their technique.

A redesigned speaker configuration further enhances the instrument’s sound. The updated system produces a wider, clearer sound with additional depth in the lower frequencies, allowing players to hear both subtle musical details and stronger dynamic passages.

Built-In Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Wi-Fi is a major addition to the FP-40, allowing the piano to communicate directly with a home wireless network following initial setup. This makes connecting to Piano Sphere straightforward, giving players access to songs, lessons, and practice features whenever they use the instrument.

The piano can also track playing activity automatically, even when the Piano Sphere app is closed. This means users can monitor their practice time and look back on their development without having to manually launch the application.

Because the FP-40 can receive software updates over Wi-Fi, its capabilities are not limited to those available when the piano is purchased. Roland can introduce future improvements, services, and integrations to expand the experience over time.

Bluetooth is also built into the instrument, enabling users to stream music from a smartphone or other compatible device through the FP-40’s speakers. This makes playing along with favourite songs simple and convenient. The free Roland Piano App provides further controls, including sound customisation and access to functions that are not available directly from the piano itself.

Piano Sphere and Skoove Learning Technology

Piano Sphere has been developed specifically for the FP-40 in partnership with Skoove. The app combines structured lessons, real-time feedback, music discovery, and progress tracking to create a more engaging approach to learning piano.

Rather than following a single learning path, Piano Sphere adapts its recommendations according to each player’s ability, musical preferences, and preferred pace. Lessons are presented step by step, helping users gradually develop their skills while learning songs they enjoy.

The free version includes 100 licensed and copyright-free songs covering genres such as pop and classical. The catalogue features music from artists including Coldplay and Harry Styles. Players can upgrade to gain access to a much larger collection of more than 1,000 songs and lessons.

The system is also designed to recognise when a player needs additional help. If the FP-40 detects difficulty in a particular passage, the Piano Sphere button can flash to prompt the player to seek assistance through the app.

To encourage regular practice, Piano Sphere includes streaks and achievement badges. Players can build streaks by practising consistently and can even protect a streak after missing a day. Badges are awarded for achievements such as completing courses and maintaining regular playing habits.

Because the FP-40 records playing time independently, practice sessions are still counted even when the app is not running. This gives users a continuous record of their musical progress.

Piano Sphere is available at no cost for iOS and Android and supports eight languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese.

By combining the FP-40’s piano technology and wireless connectivity with Skoove’s interactive learning platform, Roland is creating a more connected approach to playing—one designed not only to help people learn piano, but also to keep them interested, motivated, and playing for the long term
