Resonator Guitars

Resonator guitars were originally developed to provide better volume and projection than the familiar acoustic design. By embedding metal cones into the top of the guitar (the soundboard), an even volume boost was produced. Royall resonator guitars are handmade by a small team of craftsmen who have many years of experience. All resonator cones are handmade in the Royall workshop and all instruments are played and checked by professional players before shipping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. We stock entry-level resonator guitars for sale that play well even for newbies. Just expect a different feel, you’ll get used to the cone’s bite quickly, and it won’t take long to sound authentic.

We recommend a heavier gauge for optimal tone, but most Royall guitars come set up properly. Still, we can adjust action or setups on request to suit your playing style.

Metal-bodied resonators (often found in Royall guitars) project more volume and are great for slide work. Wood-bodied acoustic resonators offer warmer, mellower tones, perfect for fingerstyle and folk.

Wood-bodied resonator guitars tend to sound warmer and softer, which suits fingerstyle and folk playing. Metal-bodied resophonic guitars (like many Royall resonator guitars) cut through more sharply and offer more sustain, great if you want your picking to stand out. We stock both types here at Everest Music, so you can hear the difference for yourself.

Square neck resonator guitars are built for lap-style playing with a slide, popular in bluegrass. Round neck models (like most Royall guitars we sell in Ireland) are more versatile and can be played like a regular guitar or with a slide. If you’re not sure, start with a round neck—it’s the most common choice for beginners and blues players.

They’re essentially the same—people use both terms. A resophonic guitar refers specifically to models with a resonator cone (like Royall guitars), while “resonator guitar” is the broader term. All our acoustic and electric resonator guitars fall under both names.
